Old Down woods became part of the Elms Farm in the 1990s at which time it was badly maintained. Since being part of the Farm all fences have been replaced and over 2500 new trees have been planted. Old, decayed or dangerous trees were removed and indigenous species planted to restore the woodland. New planting was in part funded by South Gloucestershire council and in return permissive footpaths have been created for the enjoyment of local people. Maintenance of these paths is funded by other farm activities.
Local scout groups also enjoy using Old Down woods for fire making, den building and woodland activities.
